boat0018Ila
aka Cygnus, 1940-1954

The Ila was built in Norway in 1940 and christened the Cygnus. Sailing between Europe and the Great Lakes, the ship was variously owned by the Fjell Line, the Swedish-Chicago Line, and the Fabre Line. When the St. Lawrence Canal system froze in December 1955, Captain Geoffrey Hawthorn of Cornwall piloted the vessel out. In 1954, the ship was acquired by Lyykes Rederi A/s of Bergen, Norway and renamed the Ila.
