boat0012Called the “ugly duckling of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes system,” the En-Ar-Co was built in 1874 (originally called Berks). Between 1906 and 1934 the En-Ar-Co operated as a collier for a number of companies, including the Canadian Transit Company and the Canadian Oil Company. In 1934,  coal gas in the hold caused an explosion, killing three people and damaging the vessel. It was converted into a coal barge and acquired by the Pyke Salvage Company of Kingston in 1935.
