The iron hulled steamer Kingston was built by Bartley and Gilbert in Montreal in 1855. The vessel was registered in Kingston under the ownership of the Hon. John Hamilton as part of the Royal Mail Line.

The boat was rebuilt in 1873 and registered as the Bavarian, but burnt Nov. 5 of that year. It was refitted and rechristened the Algerian in 1874 and registered by the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Co.

After being rebuilt as a tugboat in 1913, the vessel was taken out of service around 1928.
